OK, let's talk wheels for a minute. I use Hummer 17" H2 wheels and run Goodyear SilentArmor LT265/70/17 tires. The upgrade to the Hummer H2 wheels was a mod first done by a car dealer up in New Hampshire, since the 16.5" wheels were becoming almost impossible to find. I have had this mod on for about 4 years now, and so far so good. One problem I am having however which I am preparing to address, is rubbing. I have rub issues in 2 separate places due to the fat tires. Hard over while backing I have a rub issue from at least one front tire. I also had a rub issue on the rear axles with one tire. Turns out the installation from Revcon was off very slightly with respect to front and rear wheel final position on the tag axles, the rear rear axle was slightly offset to one side accidentally on installation by the Revcon factory (and welded in place... grrr...). What this means to me is one tire (R side) is closer in then the left side. I didn't have problems with my old TransForce HT's and the 16.5's as they weren't as meaty. The 17's however, with my problem axle setup, were rubbing on the right tire that the offset was wrong on, enough so that the whitewall was scoured off. The fix for this was installing a wheel spacer, which bumped the wheel out far enough to stop it from rubbing. Naturally the H2 rims have slightly different offsets as well from the original 16.5 rims, so that didn't help either. I'd love to go to a 245 size, but I still want the Load Range E weight capacity, which is the reason I bought the Goodyear tires in the first place. There's also been a little debate on how much weight the Hummer rims are capable of handling. GM has never released publicly the weight figures, but best estimates are between 2200 and 2500 lbs per rim. The Load Range E tires will handle at least 3000 lbs per tire. So, the chance of losing a rim in-transit are fairly minimal based on the weight of our coaches (that would be NO fun at all!). So... any thoughts from the community? Right now my tires are 4 years old and in good shape, but I'd sure love to stop the rubbing up front while backing on hard over turns. The rear tire that was rubbing is fine, it just had some of the white letters scrubbed off, no damage to the sidewall other then cosmetic. Thanks Eric |

When I first installed American Racing rims and Bridgestones, I took a hammer to the aluminum inside the wheel well. A couple of good wacks and no more rubbing. They still would rub the upper fender fiberglass, but only when you took a big dip - rare enough there was never any evidence left. |

I went to Goodyear and put on a set of Sampson tires 9.6r16.5lt. They were only $139 each. Cost $1100 for installation out the door. I have the original rims on my 1979. One major issue is the valve stems are not todays standard, they are bigger and they were available in 1 day. |

You're going to die when I tell you what I came across last week. I went to Coral Springs in South Florida on Friday, I came across a Craigslist deal on 4 BRAND NEW Hummer H2 wheels, $50 each ($200 for the set of four). A gentleman that owns an alarm company down there had purchased a new H2 in 2002, and pre-ordered custom wheels for it. The wheels were taken off the truck & boxed with under 300 miles on them. These wheels are so clean you could eat off them. And, they came with new Hummer center caps as well as 32 brand new GM lug nuts. They were sitting in the boxes under a stairwell in this business's warehouse since mid-2002, he decided to clean out and I got the deal of the day. I needed the rims as originally I purchased used wheels when & where I could find them to make a complete set. Out of the 7 wheels I have on the coach currently, one of the tag axle wheels is "slightly bent" and the spare is "moderately" bent. Downside of buying used wheels from private owners ("Yep, this wheel is straight, trust me!!")... Two new wheels out of this batch will take care of that problem, and I'll still have two rainy day spares in the shed. I'll sell the benders off for either cores or wheels to be straightened out. Anyway, for the cost of the wheels and the relative availability of 17" tires in LT2X5/70-17 (my coach has 265's currently), plus the fact that Hummer wheels are fairly available at any number of wheel jobbers if you crack or lose a rim on the road, made the decision for me much more simple. Thanks, Eric |

YOU DID GREAT!! What a score. Truely happy for you. Personally I just didn't want to take the chance on underrated wheels. I had found some nice truck style alloys 8 bolt for $100 apiece but when he ordered them in we found they were only rated 2500#. On further looking he suggested considering trailer wheels. These were being discontinued and were heavily discounted. The offset is near perfect for the Revcon as there are no rubbing issues up front and the clearance at the back necessitated my removing my skirts. I have a full 2" clearance to the frame,so machining down my spacer by almost whatever I want will work.I admit I haven't attempted a fit without the spacers as I'm dealing with too many other projects at the moment, including possibly replacing my fridge that caught fire in the control behing the fridge melting all the wiring and terminal blocks. On wednesday I'm getting insurance estimate on repair or replacement. I'm torn whether to replace with new 2-way or repair the original. I feel that the 30 year old fridge mqy be better built than the new one. I'll see what the estimator says. BTW what do you think of the looks of my rims? Rene |

Very nice, good looking wheels. Yeah, I'll probably live with my 265's until I have to change rubber on the coach, then look at 245's in Load Range E to address the rub issue. These current tires are heavy LT puppies with not many miles on them at all, only thing that could kill them would be road debris or sidewall rot. And the side walls have Kevlar built into them. |

And... here's a pic of my 4 $50 wheels, to be stored in my garage for a week or 2. You could eat off these rims, boxed since 2002. Incredible. 4newrims.jpg [ 49.87 KiB | Viewed 30876 times ] Eric |

Verrry nice Eric, those look to be pretty deep wheels. Are they 8" wheels? Rene |
