You can't expect to drive old motorhome as you would old car.Old motorhome should be power tuned to your driving conditions, in stock tune these old beasts don't have the advance that is required in the mountains or significant grades. Also you will loose vacuum on grades as the engine is working harder. On a poor tune you could conceivably run out of power on long steep grades, that's the reason for a power tune. These old 454s like to see more advance than stock tune. On my 87 I had issues in the mountains going over the great divide, once home I found that on overpasses I would loose vacuum and have to compensate by giving more fuel, recurving my dizzy and changing my vacuum advance pot for more total advance made a huge difference. Talk to a good Old School mechanic or a racer for suggestions, the cost is not great if you do it yourself. did mine for less than $50.00 and its not hard to do. Better yet would be to go fuel injection that way less worry about altitude compensation. Just my .02cts.
