Second Dometic AC is working.

Upgrade "desk". LED lamp with USB. There was a nasty hole anyway...

We did a 90 miles test drive on the German Autobahn to check if there are any problems. We met some good friends, had a BBQ and returned late at night.

What we noticed:
- front turn signal (driver' s side) didn' t work
- rear red fog lamp was dead
- front headlights are still too low
- red transmission fluid loss (Yeeek!)

Please, not another leak! In fall 2021 the Revcon lost all of his transmission fluid in 5 minutes, caused by a broken line near the radiator. This happened directly at my mechanic' s repair shop - after a 600 miles journey. We were lucky.

My mechanic checked the origin of the loss. The fluid came out of the oil dipstick. The weather was very sunny on the day before yesterday. I experienced the same with my 1978 Ford LTD2 in 1997 and with my 1977 Ford LTD Hearse 1999 right after I had bought them and also in the summer time. Both cars were sitting for a long time.

I even called a tow truck for the LTD2 because I thought that the transmission was broken.

The dripping on our Revcon stopped already on our way back at night when the outside temperature was much lower than during the day.

By the way...

How often do I have to change the transmission fluid in the transfer case, which fluid is needed, how can I check the level and how is this oil change done?

Sorry, my fault. Transfer case is the wrong expression, corrected by a member of the GMC Motorhome Forum:

"There seems to be a small vocabulary problem. The drivetrain where there is a chain to a reversed transmission doesn't call any part a transfer case. That term in used in four or all wheel drive systems where the power can be selected as to where it goes.

I suspect that you are actually trying to identify what here gets called the final drive. In a typical passcar, this would be the rear end, but it isn't in the rear.

The manual calls for GM 1051022 which is a special lubricant for limited slip differentials. What you have is not a limited slip gear set. That be the case, find something like a 75W90 gear oil. Synthetic would be best.
You can check the level by putting a finger in the plug in the cover. If it comes out with lube on it, you are good.
The only way to drain the final drive is to crack the cover loose. This may damage the gasket.

So, if you don't have the gaskets on hand or at least material to make new, I suggest that you leave it alone for now. Gear oils are not subjected to the things that damage engine or transmission oils."

Nobody uses gaskets on diff covers any more. We just seal it with the right stuff. Or shall I say "The Right Stuff". It comes in a pressurized can. Just put a bead around the cover and put it on.

Works like a charm. Never had any issues with it leaking.

6 h journey (280 miles) with all of our family members...remember: My military style is only camouflage to scare the bad guys at the rest stops and to prevent road rages. I am not wearing these clothes on a daily basis.

We discovered a problem...the new AC is leaking. The Dometic 2200 is brand new and was installed 6 weeks ago. Leakage checks never performed in heavy rain, only with a garden hose. I think that my mechanic has probably made an installation mistake... :?

Provisionally sealed. But this didn´t help. There is still some water coming through. :(

Picture taken right behind of our house. The Revcon is usually parked in Saxony - Germany, but as you know, I am from Austria.
We continued our trip to Lower Austria (where my parents live) two weeks ago, which was about 290 miles or a 6.5-hour drive.

275 miles without any problems...and then: Crack! Our Revcon broke down while I was cruising 30 mph in the middle of a small village and didn' t move anymore. Worst case scenario. First I thought that it would have to be transported back to Germany, which is not so easy to organise here in Austria, because of its size.

Only 15 miles away of my destination.

After that "Crack!" there was a grinding noise. The engine was still running but no acceleration anymore (like in neutral). This happened at 30 miles an hour, rolling - my foot was not on the gas pedal.

I managed to steer the Revcon on the side of the road before it stopped completely.

No movement in "D" and "R" from this point, just the grinding noise and the speedometer showed 20 mph, while standing still and engine idling.
I heard a strange click click sound (slide window was open) at 25 mph, just 5 minutes before the breakdown.
I also noticed a "Clonk" two times when pressing gently on the gas pedal at 30 mph, 2 minutes before it went "Crack!".
This was my worst case scenario. No idea, what exactly had broken down. Final Drive, Transmission or Torque Converter.

I was sad, my older son and I had so much fun on our trip, he just loves our Revcon.

But I have a "Slantmobile", so there was support from the friendly and very helpful people of the GMC Motorhome Forum:

"Maybe your half-shaft bolts backed out / broke off. You may get lucky!"

"Since your speedometer works, things are still spinning inside the transmission. The problem is downstream from the speedometer gear. It could be the final drive."

"First question I have is, does it roll in park??

Now it is common for gmc’s to have the cv flange bolts come loose. Usually the driver side. They are easy to visually inspect.

Second item on driver side, the cv flange has 1 bolt in the center holding the flange to the final drive. The flange can move outward. That is hard to see, because it doesnt have to move outboard much. If that is the case simply have to remove cv. Push flange back in and reinstall that bolt(with locktite).

I believe both those scenarios the gmc rolls away in park."

And finally:

"Most likely bolts came out. Take 3 out of the other side to replace. Then ease it to repair site on it's own power. Get and install new bolts."

"Several people have already suggested this and you can easily look to see if the 6 bolts are present or missing. This is a very common failure. I have repaired a total of 4 coaches on the road for this problem. Crawl under the coach and see if they are there or not on both sides. The left side is usually the one that looses the bolts."

Unbelievable! 6 bolts were gone, as they had told me. Driver' s side. I don' t know what I would have done without the help from the GMC Motorhome Forum!
